FAQs
Are Dachshunds Hard to Potty Train?
Like any puppy they require a consistent schedule. Due to their small bladder size, they need to be taken outside, or to their puppy pad about every 15 minutes in the beginning. Bell training is a wonderful option for these smart little dogs. Setting up a sleep and potty area for when you need to be gone for extended periods of time is also advised in the beginning. Around 5-6 months they can start to be trusted for longer periods.
Do Dachshunds Bark?
Yes, the bark. They were used to suss out prey and part of that job was letting their owners know where they were. Some bark more than others but to assume a Dachshund won’t bark at all is not realistic. They can be trained to lessen their reaction to certain stimuli but… they will bark.
Do Dachshunds Dig ?
Yes, they dig. Again, they were bred to dig. These tenacious dogs had to follow badgers down into a hole or a hollow log. They love to dig… it gives them joy and is in their nature. Now, you can lessen digging by giving them positive outlets for their energy. Toys, snuffle matts, scent work and a designated digging area are all great options. Not all Dachshunds are as determined but they all have the drive.
Are Dachshunds Hard to Train?
No, they are normally extremely food motivated and love praise. They are wonderful at agility and obedience when you tap into their drive. They are also just as happy to cuddle on the couch for ours. In most cases they will meet you at whatever level of training you’d like to do.
